I always dreaming to make A film base on Noir. Since i Dp a noir film “Kala Malam Bulan Mengambang’ directed by late Mamat Khaled, there is something that i think i need to explore in my own craft. What is noir film actually. Below is some of my understanding on noir film for a refrence.

Noir film is a genre of cinema that emerged in the early 1940s and was popularized in the post-World War II era. This style of filmmaking is characterized by its dark, pessimistic tone and its focus on crime, betrayal, and moral ambiguity. The term 'noir' is derived from the French word for black, and refers to the style of filmmaking that focuses on the darker aspects of human nature.

Noir film is often associated with films that take place in urban settings, with a strong emphasis on the underbelly of society. These films are typically characterized by their heavy use of shadows, low-key lighting, and a sense of foreboding. The use of chiaroscuro lighting is the hallmark of noir cinematography, creating contrasts of light and dark that create a sense of unease and tension.

One of the most notable aspects of noir film is the flawed protagonist. The main character in a noir film is often an antihero, struggling with his own demons and morally ambiguous decisions. Many of these characters are haunted by their past actions or are driven by their own desires, leading them to engage in criminal behavior or other morally suspect activities.

Another common trope in noir film is the Femme Fatale, a seductive and alluring woman who uses her charm to manipulate the male protagonist. The Femme Fatale is often depicted as dangerous and unpredictable, playing into society's fears of female power and agency.

The themes of noir film often revolve around corruption, greed, and the impact of societal structures on human behavior. These films often explore the darker aspects of human nature, and ask audiences to consider their own moral compass when faced with seemingly impossible choices.

Despite its dark subject matter, noir film has had a lasting impact on cinema and pop culture. Many of the tropes and styles of noir filmmaking have been adopted by modern filmmakers, leading to a resurgence of interest in the genre. Contemporary cinema continues to explore themes of moral ambiguity and the dark side of human nature, suggesting that noir filmmaking still has much to teach us about ourselves and our society.
